A Walk in Penn's Woods-Annual Event
October 2019- A 2-mile section of the Birch Trail that goes along a ridge above Tom’s Run in Cook Forest State Park was chosen for the 2019 walk. The State Park recently leveled and smoothed the trail. This walk included bridge crossings over Tom’s Run throughout the loop. Birch Trail runs through part of the ancient Forest of Cook Forest State Park. The trail is dominated by ancient Eastern hemlocks, white pine, beech, maple trees and ferns.
October 2018-a moderate 2-mile interpretive hike, lead by the Friends of Cook Forest, to celebrate the trail’s recent rejuvenation. Hikers observed recent trail work and new interpretive signs that were created to highlight one of the most beautiful old growth areas of the park.
